Salla closed her eyes as she pushed through the torture in her fingers and played the first note, pulling her bow across the strings as carefully as the quiver in her body allowed. She focused on the music, ignoring the ache thrumming in her body and the dragon shifter’s laughter deep within the dark cavern before her. She only had moments to impress him before he snapped her in half.
Claws scraped against rock as she played. Tingles shot across her skin, and the sorrowful melody was almost enough for her to forget the pain deep in her bones.
A deafening roar transformed into a haughty laugh. “This is the gift you offer me?”
Fear tinged her music. If he didn’t like her song, he’d eat her instead of granting her a wish. She needed that wish, or she’d lose the ability to control her hands completely.
She refused to lose her music.
Tears welled, and Salla pulsated with pure emotion as she poured all her pain and desperation into each stroke.
“Not sure what you want me to feel, siren, is this a sad song…or one of triumph?” Long, clawed fingers twisted around her hair.
Disgust coursed through her. How did he not know the feelings she infused into each note, each stroke? Did he not feel at all? Her eyes snapped open. Laughter flickered in the monstrous pupils, and realization struck.
This was a dragon, one who knew no pain.
Her song would never touch his heart.
