His breath skims my neck, its chill sending shivers down my spine. My heart pounds, my pulse thrumming beneath his deadly touch. Everything broken inside of me wants to give in, to accept the life he offers. One without pain, without suffering. Just pleasure and thrill until the sun eventually takes us together.

Cold fingers trace circles on the exposed flesh of my arms and back, reminding me how inhuman he is. What I would become if I give in.

Yet…fear settles in my gut, betraying the decision I’d made.

“Just say the word,” he murmurs against my flesh, his fangs scraping my skin in a way that sets my insides on fire.  “Join me.”

My breath hitches. I’ve been madly in love with him since I set my eyes on him at the bar, since he kissed me gently beneath a blanket of stars, since he promised he could mend my heart.

With him, I’d never be alone. I’d never have to bury another lover.

We’d be eternal.

My arms tighten around him. I need this, I want this. Yet why am I hesitating?

“I need you,” he hisses, his control slipping with each of my heartbeats.

We’re a whirlwind of desperation when we’re together, but we don’t really know each other.

“No,” I whisper. Tears blur my vision as he pulls back, disappointment sharp on his face. “Not yet. I just…need more time.”

He leans in, kissing my forehead. “As much as you need, I promise.”
