I open the jail cell and slip inside, only minutes left before the guards return. My target hangs naked in chains against the wall, skin ripped from his wrists and ankles. Darkness surrounds his unconscious body as it endures what his mind cannot.

I’m not quite sure how I’m going to help him escape. My talents lie in invisibility and stealth, and I don’t have the strength to carry dead weight.

But the money for his rescue is worth trying. If I fail, I can always find another job. I only took this one because it intrigued me.

Rescuing the called sacred one? Helping him escape his eternal torment of torture and abuse?

That’s paying enough for me to retire a rich man, and I couldn’t resist.

I rub smelling salts beneath his nose, but he doesn’t turn. Just…hangs there. I smack his face, but nothing. Grumbling, I move on and begin lockpicking his shackles. It’s quick work, embarrassing locks for such a prestigious prisoner.

The sacred one falls from the wall and collapses into an unconscious pile at my feet. Fantastic.

A distant door clangs, signaling the guards’ return. I’m out of time. I kick the man once, twice, and still he doesn’t rouse. There’s one option left.

I make quick work of my knife, slicing his throat, before I slip out of the cell. It’s not quite what my client wanted, but at least he’s free from torture and abuse. The question is if they’ll still pay me…
