Wednesday Words on a Saturday! I actually wrote the draft on Wednesday, but ran out of time to post it. I wish I could have posted it yesterday as it was Friday the 13th, which is the perfect vibe for this post. But it just didn’t work out either. So here we are, on a Saturday, finally enjoying all the glory of horror and future partnerships. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

“You know,” Jason whispers, eyes wide as the woman before him lays a plastic tarp on the ground in front of his tied feet, “you don’t have to kill me.”

The woman pauses her work, meeting his gaze. Determined, all-seeing. This isn’t going to work. His heart races as adrenaline kicks in his fight-or-flight response—again. He flexes, twisting his wrists, but he doesn’t have enough give to free them from their ties to the back of his chair.

“And if I don’t kill you, what would you propose?” Her words are as even as her gaze, and Jason squirms.

“I can help you.”

The woman scoffs and resumes her work. “Help how. Just another desperate attempt to get free. I prefer crying. The others cried so well.”

A thrill rushes through Jason. There’s nothing left to lose—except himself. “I’m a paramedic. I save lives.”

“Ha. And I take them.”

“What’s the adage? Opposites attract. I can help you. I’m trained, I can keep someone alive longer for you, give you the opportunity to really dance along the thread of life and death.”

The woman drops the tarp corner then approaches him. “You’ll kill for me? Keep them alive?”

He nods. His death for someone else’s. Wasn’t too bad—people died all the time anyway.

His own life matters most.

Jason nods. “Partners.”

The woman grabs a knife and holds the tip against the rope around his wrists. Her breath is heavy. “But are we really opposites?”
