The Halloween Surprise
I inch open my front door, weakly offering my plastic cauldron of chocolate to the toothy grins on my spiderweb-decorated porch.
“Trick or treat!” a bright blue fairy princess and a Spiderman sing as they dip their mittened fingers into the heavy cauldron.
Before I can get into character and release my practiced witchy cackle, a feeling of dread clenches my gut. I glance about the street filled with laughing kids, but the fake fog in my yard obscures them. Nothing looks amiss except–
The fog swirls around a dark figure beneath my Weeping Willow. I meet his eyes, a piercing ruby, and my breath catches.
I know those eyes.
Eyes that haunt my dreams. My nightmares. The glowing ruby that tortures me into hyperventilating as I wake in pitch darkness. My body heavier, colder, and more exhausted each night.
“Thank you,” the stranger drawls. “I’ll be seeing you soon.”
