Introducing my short story for last week’s prompt!

Six decomposing bodies danced on the cement slabs Amelia stored them on. Their arms swayed disjointedly to the symphonic soundtrack playing from her computer speakers, and their hips tried to sway back and forth but failed miserably.

Their joints were still rusty, but they were at least moving. Grinning, Amelia typed notes into her computer.

As the melody crescendoed, matching an on-screen fight scene she couldn’t see, the bodies shivered and stumbled off their cement slabs.

Amelia swore, her fingers hovering over the keyboard pause button, and waited to see what the bodies would do. She had never dealt with an experiment gone haywire before, but a part of her needed to know what they’d do free from their concrete confines.

The bodies kept dancing, their joints shifting more smoothly, and the tallest straightened its neck then turned to stare at her.

There were no eyes, long removed and sewn shut, cotton packed beneath the eyelid to give shape. But the closed lids still met her own, and Amelia shivered.

The song ended, replaced by a light, fast-paced melody. Another body stopped dancing and looked at Amelia. Then a third.

Amelia paused the music, expecting the bodies to fall once the music released them.

Except, none fell. They stopped dancing, but they still moved and shifted until all stared at her.

Amelia carefully used one hand to finish her notes, trying to look like she wasn’t moving, then bolted. Unfortunately, the bodies were faster.

“Avoid soundtracks!”
