Happy New Year!

A weather-worn piano awaits in the center of overgrown portals, moss and vines obscuring the stone bases. My throat dries. No one had warned me music was the key to the portals, only constantly reminding me that I was the chosen one, that I was destined to travel the different planes to prevent the darkness from infesting every land.

Nothing in my training was music related. I casted spell after spell, held my concentration for days, spent hours fighting to increase my muscular stamina along with my mind.

They’d decreed I was ready, that a signal was received from the green portal of a spring realm.

I trail hesitant fingers over the dirty wood, leaving a streak through the grime. The first key plays something like music, but it sounds weird. Another key, another awful note.

The massive thing works, but the weather has addled it.

The bench looks as if it’ll tip over with my weight, but I sit anyway and try to play.

It sounds all wrong, like a toddler banging on the keyboard. But I don’t stop, playing discordant note after discordant note until the magic around me buzzes in the air, the portals activating until swirls of color hover over each base.

The green portal shimmers, and I sigh. Yet as I step forward, magic from the left envelopes me, yanking me through a portal of deep blue mist.

Bitter cold bites at my flesh when I land, and the mist portal disappears behind me.
