Wind whips through my hair, stinging my cheeks and bare arms, and I laugh as I clutch my dragon’s harness tighter. He swoops low, his belly nearly grazing the tops of cars below, earning us a cascade of furious honking.
Even my dragon snorts a laugh.
He twists through the air, me tightening my grip with my thighs. We spin, slipping between tall semis. Passengers are pulling out their cameras, rolling windows down, several angry humans shouting curses at my name.
Like I could give a damn.
Red and blue flash in the distance, and my laughter cuts off. A pit forms in my gut, but my dragon doesn’t slow. He pushes forward, twisting tightly to leave the main road and disappear down an alley. Taking to the skies isn’t much of an option, as police could follow us better.
Yet the lights turn down the alley, and my dragon shivers as the piercing sirens overwhelm him. They’re not fun for me either, but I only have the ears of a human. They are torture to my mighty predator.
My dragon quivers as he launches higher, but the police aren’t dumb. It’s not their first dragon chase. The sirens grow louder, shifting into a pitch designed for this very purpose, and my dragon’s wings falter.
We fall.
The landing is rough, and I’m instantly checking over my dragon. He’s shaking, but his body is fine.
Rough hands grip my shoulder and pull me back. “Charlotte, you’re out of warnings.”
