I really struggled with this prompt, and I wrote four different flash fiction for it. Only two were okay, and I couldn’t decide between them. So now you get both!
Introducing story one for the prompt for Wednesday, May 24, 2023!
Juliette picked at the black petunias in her lap, rolling the velvet petals in her fingers before dropping them onto her voluminous lace skirts and the marble floor. Beyond the small window, dark clouds rolled through the sky, casting the outside forest-themed wedding into deep shadows.
“Stop that,” the woman behind her snapped, pulling the petunias away and tucking the remaining undamaged ones into Juliette’s dark curls. “A lady is getting married today, not this miserable girl.”
Juliette pressed her forehead against the cool glass. Two vultures were settling on top of the wooden archway, a stark contrast from the green vines and leaves wrapped around each wooden beam.
He was here.
Her heart skipped a beat. “And if I don’t wish to marry?”
“Hush,” the woman scolded. “Your father has selected a good husband—”
The powder room door slammed open, forced open by strange, angry winds within the house. Juliette’s skirts swirled around her legs, petals swept into the air and slamming against her and the windowed wall.
A man, angry and cloaked in death’s black robes, hovered in the doorway.
“Adam,” Juliette breathed, clamoring from her chair as the woman tending her symboled the cross over her heart and prayed.
The man rushed to her, cluttering her to his chest, kissing the top of her head.
“Are you ready?” he asked, the distant thunder not so distant anymore.
Juliette nodded.
The man inhaled her scent as lightning cracked outside, splitting open the green grass.
“Then come with me.”
