Today was bittersweet.
This past year, I developed and taught an online, specialty character creation course for high school students. Four mini-courses of four classes each. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but also the most magical. Each class was a blast and I loved working with the students.
I’m so sad that it’s over.
And yet, I desperately need to rest.
This past year has been fraught with health issues, many of which doctors still don’t understand. I’ve been to the doctor so many times, taken tests, been to the ER, and waited many weeks and months for appointments with specialists with long new patient waitlists. I’m no closer to answers and often in a lot of pain. This has made class preparation, grading, and even teaching somedays to be such a struggle.
But when I saw the student’s smiling faces and heard their eager voices over Zoom, the struggle was worth it. It was an honor to share my experience with these brilliant and creative youth. And it’s become one of my most cherished memories.
I hope one day I can teach these courses again, but I’m glad for now they’ll be offered as recorded courses for future students.
I can’t wait to see what the next generation of writers creates.
Until then, I’ll keep teaching my fiction writing class and feeding the creative fires of our youth.
