Waves crested in the dark ocean, revealed only by their deep sound. I watched the fog from the safety of the lighthouse, my eyes wide, searching.
Power was growing in the ocean. Goosebumps spread across my skin beneath my thick clothing, and I tightened the blanket around my shoulders. A soft wail carried over the waves, a siren pleading into the night, desperate for the lost.
The lighthouse beam blasted into the night, a single guide. But with the siren, there was little hope for any remaining sailors.
Another night of failure.
My stomach sank. Desperate, I willed magic to gather, but the sea was too angry, too uncontrolled. Instead, I twisted nature’s magic from the wind. Not as powerful, but at least something, and I funneled it into the lighthouse beam. My final attempt to save someone.
The fog parted around the light, and a horn cut through the wind and waves. Someone had seen it.
I maintained the magic, threading as much wind as I could gather from the air around me, but it just wasn’t strong enough as the siren sang louder, thickening the fog.
The light flickered, and I swore, desperation dotting my brow as sweat gathered in the chilly night. In a final burst, the beam brightened, illuminating a small boat. Shouts rang out through the night, pain gripping my soul, and the boat began to sink.
The siren song ended, leaving the night colder. I sunk forward, spent, and released the wind.
Another failure.
