A bit late, but here’s my take on last week’s Wednesday Words prompt!

Lila turned up the static on her headgear, tipped her head back in her seat, and closed her eyes, desperate for a quick nap. She had about…twenty minutes before her commander called in her troop for the next patrol. Maybe.

As her eyes drooped, voices began buzzing in the intercom again, so she turned up the static again, yet there was still a low voice cutting through it all.

“Can’t a woman get a nap around here?” she grumbled into the comm.

Her commander cut through the low voice. “No one was talking, Lila.”

Lila bolted upright. The low voice was still talking, still muffled, and if it wasn’t her team…

She switched off her headgear and yanked it off her head, but the voice continued.

There was nothing in her cockpit, nothing unusual in the docking station she waited in. And nothing but stars beyond the large window panels.

Lila swore, shoving her headgear back on and roaring her ship to life. Her teammates shouted in her comm, but she ignored them, focusing only on the low voice cutting through it all.

She blasted into space and sped away until the colony was a distant basketball. The voice still continued, directly to her mind.

“Incoming, prepare. Incoming, prepare…”

Lila opened up her comm, glaring at her ship’s radar screen. “Commander, you may want to ready—“

The radar bleeped, then again.

“Incoming, prepare. Incoming, they’re here.”

Great. Maybe next time the universe could give her more of a warning.
