Sena trailed her fingers along the dirt walls as she wandered through the dark passageway. Clumped dirt crumbled beneath her touch, falling onto her boots. There were no plant vines sticking from the dirt, no rocks to stumble on. The air was hot and humid.

This was not the passageway to the forest.

The humidity in the underground tunnel increased as the pathway dipped deeper into the ground. Faint howls echoed in the distance.

She was certain she was going to hell, but she wasn’t sure why. Her spell was good, the components were correct. Even the doorway she’d opened looked right.

But this tunnel, it was all wrong.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t go back. Wrong spell for that. She’d need to reach her destination and cast a new one to return home.

If whatever lived at the end allowed her to.

Well, the only way was forward.

It wasn’t long before the path evened out and Sena stopped rolling.

Fifty paces ahead was another door.

Her exit.

She rubbed her palms on her thighs and inhaled deeply. She could face whatever was behind that door, no problem. She could face it and set up the spell to come right back home.

Her fingers slipped on the hot, iron doorknob, and she opened the door.

A man, shirtless with leathery wings sprouting from his back, smiled at her. “Ah, I’ve been waiting for you, Sena.”

Her heart skipped a beat. Maybe she didn’t want to go home after all.
