When I read goblet, I was instantly taken to a drunk bard… and their reputations. I couldn’t resist! I hope you enjoy this week’s Wednesday Words!
“Do you need help with anything else?” the barmaid asked as she dressed, her breathing panicked as screams echoed outside of the tavern.
Lolak finished tying his belt. “I’ve got my goblet and my flute. Don’t think I need anything else. Catch you next time.”
He blew her a kiss then leaped from the second-story window, eager to join the fray. Large tentacles whipped through the air from the dock, reaching for men defending their valuable trade port. One tentacle wrapped around a scrawny mage, grappling with him briefly, then shoved him down a mighty kraken’s throat.
Lolak leaned against the tavern and began to play his small flute. A soft melody joined the fray of fighting crashes, swearing, and screams. Most didn’t hear, but the pitch was just right for a kraken…
Tentacles slammed into the tavern, thrashing desperately for the source. Lolak ducked low and kept playing, willing the magic to taunt the beast into leaving the ocean.
When the kraken crawled onto the dock, Lolak switched to a harsher tune, faster, louder. The kraken towered over him, lightning crackling in the air, and he played the final measure. Lightning evaporated with a loud crack, and the kraken turned into a hand mirror.
Lolak laughed as he picked up the mirror. Inside, a tiny kraken raged. “And the mighty beast falls.” Lolak smashed the mirror, letting the shards fall around him.
The kraken was no more, just like the tavern. Too bad. That barmaid was a good lay.
