Power builds in the air around me as sparks cut through the blue sky and the weakening barrier.

“Get home while you still can, son,” Dad shouts, his robes swirling in the barrier’s winds.

I won’t leave you. Unfortunately I can’t talk and maintain a support spell at the same time yet.

“I can’t hold them back much longer.” His entire body trembles as the barrier cracks, sparks flashing faster in green.

The wind strengthens, and my magic runs dry.

Dad’s magic rockets me away, and I land sharply on my tailbone.

“Someone has to warn your mother, your sister! Now!”

Thunder threatens the meadow, but there are no clouds above, no storms moving in. Just long-banished magic and creatures desperate to get in.

I finally run, every step a painful betrayal.

The barrier’s cracks reach out over our home. Splotches of greens and blacks light the sky. At the door, Sarah cries in Mom’s skirts.

“Dad can’t hold it back,” I scream.

Mom cries as she ushers us into a small stone shelter deep beneath our home. She seals the door with her own weak magic and hugs us.

Lightning explodes, the barrier shattering and plunging the world into darkness.

We emerge from the shelter to a land of nothing. No salvage, no meadow in the distance. Only flat land extending forever into a greenish horizon.

“I left him behind.” My words are thick and gagging.

Mom kisses my hair. “Yes, but you came to us, saving his legacy.”
