Chaz’s hand dropped from the lyre strings as he watched his best friend get roasted by a column of fire. They were supposed to be defeating the dragon and bringing its head back for glory and fame.
Maybe they should have waited until they had a little more experience first.
“Dude, I need a heal. I’m out,” Broga wheezed after the dragon’s breath abated.
Right. Heals. Chaz tightened his grip on his lyre, trying to remember the spell he’d just learned. The chords were simple, but what were the lyrics?
The dragon lowered its head and inhaled.
Broga tried to run. “Chaz, now!”
Chaz would just have to make up the words.
“Blood coagulates, cells stitch together,” he spun.
The dragon released another breath of flames.
This wasn’t working. Maybe a distraction?
Chaz began again. “As the moonlight gleams on your mesmerizing scales, my heart pounds for you.”
The dragon whipped its head around.
“Your fire keeps me warm, wraps me in your love.”
Smoke flared from the dragon’s nostrils as it approached Chaz.
“Stay with me, and we’ll become one.”
The dragon nuzzled Chaz’s neck, a hot poker pressing against his flesh. Heat scorched through his veins.
“You idiot,” Broga grumbled. “We’re supposed to kill the dragon—instead you mated with it!”
The dragon crooned.
Chaz ran his fingers over the dragon’s sharp scales. “Hey, I’m not saying this all my fault, but—”
Broga snorted. “Sure it is. What did you do, roll a nat 20 when you were serenading a freaking dragon?”
